shiiiiver asked: I'm a freshman at UNC, and I track the UNC tag on here so I saw your post about donating platelets and I'm really interested in doing that. Do I just head over to the hospital to make an appointment or could I make one online?
you can make appointments
or go to the website mentioned below for the phone number. You’ll be talking to Bridgit who is the very nice receptionist.
make sure to tell your friends!
If you come with a friend you get free movie tickets to Southpoint or Timberlyne for each of you
Come with 3 friends and fill up all 4 chairs (make sure to schedule well in advance for that!) and they’ll order y’all a pizza AND give you the free tickets. As well as all of the snacks they have there to munch on as well.
Or if your friends are needle shy you can also go on Mondays and just get a movie ticket solo.
It’s at the UNC Cancer Hospital on the far far Southwest side of campus. Make sure that if you walk down there to walk slow and take your time because if you hurry (especially in the heat) your blood pressure will appear too high to donate. That happened to me once!
Here’s the website for more info. I highly recommend it though for everyone. I’ve only ever had sort of bad experiences with blood donation because of the nausea afterwards but have experienced none of that with platelet donation.
Platelet donation is also really important. UNC gets about 210 units donated at their center every month but need around 350 for all sorts of patients. Sometimes they’ll have special needs patients and send out emergency plees for more donors to deal with demand. So your donation will 100% be appreciated by UNC patients.
