“The only reason I’m putting myself out here and talking about anything is because there’s been so many trans* girls on Youtube or that I’ve read about that put themselves out there and made their knowledge available that I feel like I have to return the favor. You know, when I was 14 years old, if I was watching House of Style, watching a transsexual being interviewed and talking about that, then it would’ve completely changed my life, you know… I would’ve felt saved.”
what a glorious amount of black in that wardrobe
I wish sometimes I could just rock that sort of aesthetic like she does

Larry White, in his 70’s, has spent 32 years of his life behind bars. He discusses how difficult it was for him to transition back into society after being in prison for so long. While he was incarcerated, he had organized a small social network within prison to advocate for better treatment of inmates. Once released, he decided to continue his advocacy, especially for older inmates living behind bars: “My whole life now is geared to go back in and help those I left behind.”
Al Jazeera English hosts an award-winning documentary series, Fault Lines, and this episode examines life sentences and the elderly within the prison population in the United States. [x]
and fyi, Blacks received longer sentences than White inmates for the same crimes.

karkles-the-adorabloodthirsty:
I got dressed in my traditional Indian regalia, but there was a man, he was the producer of the whole show. He took that speech away from me and he warned me very sternly. “I’ll give you 60 seconds or less. And if you go over that 60 seconds, I’ll have you arrested. I’ll have you put in handcuffs.”
- Sacheen Littlefeather in Reel Injun (2009), dir. Neil Diamond.
They were MAD, CONFUSED AND PRESSED that Marlon Brando would betray White Supremacy in this way.
To this very day, they are TWISTED over this.
And when Littlefeather got up there and READ THEM FOR FILTH, they GAGGED. For eons.So I imagine there are people like me out there who’ve never even heard of Marlon Brando and are extremely confused over why this is important.
Marlon Brando was the Don in The Godfather, and in 1973, he was nominated for and won an Academy Award for it. However, he was also a huge Natives rights activist, and boycotted the ceremony because he felt that Hollywood’s depictions of Native Americans in the media led to the Wounded Knee Incident (which I was always taught as “the second massacre at Wounded Knee” but apparently that’s not the real name). He sent Sacheen Littlefeather, an Apache Native rights activist, in his stead. Wikipedia’s article on her explains the rest:
Brando had written a 15-page speech for Littlefeather to give at the ceremony, but when the producer met her backstage he threatened to physically remove her or have her arrested if she spoke on stage for more than 60 seconds.[5] Her on-stage comments were therefore improvised. She then went backstage and read the entire speech to the press. In his autobiography My Word is My Bond, Roger Moore (who presented the award) claims he took the Oscar home with him and kept it in his possession until it was collected by an armed guard sent by the Academy.
That is what this gifset is about.
You have GOT to read up on this. The Wounded Knee Incident, Marlon Brando and Sacheen Littlefeather, Anna Mae Aquash. ALL OF IT.

I recently watched this on Netflix and it was so good. They are perfect for each other!
Currently.
My Aunt works with several couples where both individuals have Down Syndrome. I’ve had dinner with a few of them. And all of the ones I’ve seen have had super adorable relationships. So this was interesting to watch.

How does the distribution of power, wealth and resources shape opportunities for health?
Discussion of how one’s socio-economic status affects one’s long term health.
How stress cause heart problems and higher levels of cortisol that lead to weight problems. Poor access to healthy foods or activities. That being poor causes more immunological problems LONG TERM, even if you raise your class. That growing up poor even affects a child’s brain development. The fact that one’s race is also a factor in health and causes of death. Examines ways to reduce health inequality, including past efforts. Economic policy as health policy.
57 minute video
I absolutely 100% recommend this documentary.
And tell me that socio-economic class is only an indicator of how much money you have.

“One of the saddest days of my life was when my mother told me Superman did not exist… She thought I was crying because it’s like Santa Claus is not real. I was crying because there was no one coming with enough power to save us.”

Movie Premise of the Day: Back in 2010, director Ben Popik recruited five comedy writers for a surprise challenge: Each would write 15 pages of a movie, having read only the previous five pages of the script.
They were all in, save for one stipulation: If they wrote the movie, Popik had to make it.
Done and done — two years later, The Exquisite Corpse Project is a comedy, a love story, a psycho-sexual thriller, and a supernatural adventure all in one. And it’s also winning awards!
